Cow Bank in Cambodia

Story

This project aims to loan selected poor families in the communities’ one (1) cow per family. After the cow(s) produce the calve during the first two year period, the project will collect 1 calve (1 year old) or money equivalent to the value of 1 calve, upon receipt of which the calves or money will be invested back into the project where the cycle will recommence with newly chosen families.

The cows will provide these villagers with a means of generating more income to raise their standard of living.

For example:

Cows can be sold at the local markets for a profit. They can also be loaned out to other villagers for a fee. For example, a neighbor can rent a cow for ploughing at 2.50 USD for half a day. Villagers also have the power to barter for rice and an assortment of food products with other villagers. Thus families will have greater access to a variety of nutritious foods through these different methods of income generation.

Contrary to the imported foods commonly sold at the markets, the harvested vegetables of cow farm owners are chemical free because cow dung is used as a natural fertilizer.

This project has the ultimate aim of breaking the poverty cycle for a family and the wider community. Something so simple can bring health and well being to a family and therefore increase their standard of living.

We have staff and volunteers working weekly with families and the community in the Provinces to educate, train and equip these families.  These staff will monitor and oversee the project to ensure its success and long term sustainability.
